Protein Phosphatase 2A (PP2A) is a member of Phosphoprotein phosphatases(PPPs) family that plays essential role covered a broad spectrum of cellular events by regulating the phosphorylation level of over 100 target proteins. The function and regulation of PP2A is extremely important but for many years, researchers have little knowledge about this protein and its complex interaction network. This talk will illustrate the key components and regulators of PP2A, by a complete series of PP2A related crystal structures. Our speaker, Dr. Feng Guo is the key contributor for two PP2A complex structures published a few years ago. His work eventually completes the last pieces of the puzzle and helps us to understand PP2A from structure to function.
Dr. Feng Guo, Ph.D., is an experienced X-ray Crystallographer, a scientist who, by means of X-ray diffraction studies the crystal structure of large molecules at atomic level, including proteins and enzymes involved in human diseases and cancers. His studies have significant contribution on helping us to understand the mechanism of these diseases and cancers, as well as applications on modern bio-pharmaceutical for rationale drug design. Dr. Guo received his B.S. from University of Science and Technology of China and graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago as Ph.D. in Biology. Dr. Guo continued his postdoc training at McArdle Lab for Cancer Research, University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he made a major contribution on the PP2A project. Dr. Guo was leading the Protein and Structural Biology Project targeting lipid kinases for anti-HCV drug development at Stanford University, before he joined DowDuPont Industrial Biosciences as a scientist of Molecular Microbiology.
Dr. Feng Guo has a broad investigation on many fields of medical and biological sciences, including viral infected liver diseases, tumorigenesis/metastasis of human cancer, tumor necrosis, tree nut allergies, developmental biology, immunology, cell cycle regulation, and transcriptional factors. A recent structure of Diabody-Epo receptor solved by Dr. Guo and colleagues was published on Cell. Currently, Dr. Guo is serving as the reviewer board of Advances in Biological Chemistry, Journal of Cancer Therapy and Acta Biochimica et Biophysica Sinica.
9808级校友郭锋博士是位有多年经验的蛋白晶体学家，主要从事蛋白质大分子结晶及晶体结构解析工作并对多种蛋白表达系统有丰富的经验。其研究领域包括在分子水平上深入了解各种疾病和癌症的发生机制，并在此基础上直接指导对小分子药物及抗体药物的设计。郭博士本科就读于中国科学技术大学，其后在伊州理工大学获得生物学博士学位并于威斯康星大学麦迪逊分校从事博士后研究。在他完成了关于蛋白磷酸化酶PP2A的项目之后，郭博士被聘为斯坦福大学医学院的研究助理并作为Prof. K. Chris Garcia (霍华德休斯研究员（HHMI）, 美国科学院院士) 和Prof. Jeffrey Glenn 两个实验室合作项目的主要负责人之一，承担该项目中关于丙型肝炎病毒及其他感染性病毒的相关蛋白的纯化及结构解析，并指导针对此类病毒的小分子药物设计。目前郭锋博士作为分子微生物学专家在美国陶式杜邦公司从事相关研究工作。
